Y.E.L.L. had its start in mid 2006 when a small group of parents expressed their concern in their children’s leading, philanthropic, and spiritual education and development. Feeling that these areas were not being properly enriched to their fullest capacity, the parent group quickly began to brain storm the organization now known as Y.E.L.L.
A group of teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 18 were recruited into the group. Almost immediately the group began participating in activities, workshops and social outings that would enhance such skills needed to ensure success in their future as college applicants, job seekers, and leaders.
Events included an SAT preparatory course, a public speaking and essay writing workshop, a small and engaging book club, a private course on etiquette and dining, and a sexual education class taught by the Christian Dr. Donald Brown.
When not in an enthused lecture or interactive course, early Y.E.L.L. members found themselves taking classes in ballroom dance, taking an excursion into the world of jazz lead by two professional jazz musicians, acting out scenes from “A Raisin in the Sun”, and celebrating and teaching their black heritage through original poetry, music and dance during Black History Month.
Y.E.L.L. founders and members have taken pride in their many accomplishments over the past few years. Through the many activities and educational courses that Y.E.L.L. founders deemed so important, Y.E.L.L. alumni have found it easier when applying and going onto higher education.
Many of Y.E.L.L. alumni can be found at colleges such as Morehouse, Spellman, Wellesley, University of Michigan and Boston College. Y.E.L.L. members invite teenagers to become a part of the growing organization that has clearly benefited many students in their pursuit to attain their goals beyond the High School Level.
